For the longest time I got hung up on this paradox. Sometimes it seemed to me like the Christian life was a bait and switch game: "Come on in, admission's free. But once you're in you have to strive and work real hard to STAY in."
Doug Wilson has an interesting discussion of this particular paradox over on his Blog and Mablog. I think it's worth checking out, although I must add the caveat that I'm not so sure I agree with everything the man writes on other topics.
